Frank Herbert, Brian Herbert: Dune [series]

without comments

First and best book from the ingenius author Frank Herbert. I did through it about 4 times and I swallowed every word. It is simply best book I’ve evere read. Most highly recommended. Even though it is sci-fi genre, I’m sure it has something to say to readers that are not interested in such books. Story continues in 5 other parts, which are great too.

Just to make sure I didn’t miss any, here is summary of Dune-related books I know about in chronological order:

Legends of Dune trilogy

  1. Butlerian Jihad
  2. Mahine Crusade
  3. Battle of Corrin

Prelude to Dune by Brian Herbert

  1. House Atreides
  2. House Harkonnen
  3. House Corrino

Original Dune series by Frank Herbert

  1. Dune
  2. Dune Messiah
  3. Children of Dune
  4. God Emperor of Dune
  5. Heretics of Dune
  6. Chapterhouse of Dune

Extending parts by Brian Herbert

  1. Hunters of Dune
  2. Sandworms of Dune

7th part of Dune novel, written by Frank Herbert’s son – Brian Herbert and co-author Kevin J. Anderson. Story continues and uncovers many plots and adventures of known figures from part 5 and 6 of original Dune series. It is said that this book and also 8th (final) part are following outline that was created by Frank Herbert. Brian did a good job in my opinion and this book is highly readable and very interesting. If you think nothing is gonna surprise you in Dune universe, you are wrong… Highly recommended book, slightly better than “prelude” series or even older Butlerian Jihad and its companions.

Joseph Conrad: Secret Sharer

without comments

Not very long, deeply personal novel by Joseph Conrad, chap originaly from Poland. It’s about man that was put in charge as captain of sailboat. Nothing really noticable happens on the deck of that sailboat, but you wouldn’t believe what is happening under deck..

Jiri Grygar: Vesmir jaky je [CZ]

without comments

Book about cosmology from one of the best czech popularizator of science. Book was published at 1997, but I read it in year 2005, so it’s not so deprecated. More important is that it is well written and author is capable to explain very difficult topics in very simple words. Through reading this book I evoked my great interest and passion for this area and books about modern physics that I read started to grow since this one.

That’s what I’m reading right now, so in about 1 month I will have more to say, but now it looks like it’s the best book about physics I’ve ever read.

Ernest J. Gaines: A Lesson Before Dying

without comments

This short book is set in the late 40s in US state Louisiana. One young black men was accidently involved in liquer store robbery and after shooting and killing, he was the only one that stayed alive. In those times, this was enough to put him in jail and to punish him with death. Story begins when court reaches conclusion and acknowledges him guilty. This book tells us a story how can a kid become a men in a very short time in jail, morover, he won’t be the only one that needs a lesson.

When I finished this book, I wanted to find some links on the net to put them here and by the way I discovered that there is also movie that was based on this book, which I’m sure I will get into one day.
