My first blog post from cell
Hi everyone! Two days ago I was heard that an interesting plugin for wordpress has just appeared under the sun. I immediately downloaded it and this is my first post from my beloved BB Javelin (Curve 8900). I’m on my way out of Bratislava right now, I’m attaching a fresh image if you don’t believe my mouth words ![]()
So long…
VoIP on your cell phone? Yes way!
Who says you can’t route your calls through internet on your mobile phone? Well, you can, but … argh … where are those apps? I heard something about REAL sip client software for Nokia N9o cell phone, or something like that, but I like my BlackBerry more
My problem is, I didn’t find any real sip client software for BlackBerry so far. I only found apps that are tied together with specific proprietary services. For example Voxofon or Vopium – those are the 2 most visible VoIP apps for blackberry these days. However these work only for selected countries and guess what – my beloved Slovakia is not listed
. There is only one app I that can do VoIP on BlackBerry in Slovakia – EQO. It’s not SIP client, its proprietary EQO service, but the prices are fairly good. Better than nothing at least.
Take a look at this graph. I use O2 as my cellular network provider. Justvoip is another great app, which runs on PC and its prices are unbeatable, as far as my research goes. I’m interested only in Slovakia as my home country and also in Czech and UAE, as I have friends there.

comparison of different voip and cell phone charges per minute (in EUR /w taxes)
You see, justvoip comes out as a clear winner, however due to a fact, that I can run it only on my PC, I have to combine this three services in awkward way to get cheapest price per minute/sms. If only BlackBerry had a standard SIP client application, so I can connect to my justvoip account from my cell phone…
Conclusion: Anyway, it’s still pretty clumsy to use… so I have justvoip on desktop and cell phone with EQO. How I use them?
- I’m on PC
- sending sms through justvoip,
- calling internationaly and slovak landlines with EQO,
- calling localy with cellular network
- I’m on the road – drunk in the some dirty pit, heavy dungeon or dark cave
- everything international or slovak landline goes through EQO
- slovak cell phones and sms’s (try to pronounce it!) go through cellular network
What do you think about that? Throw some rocks on me in comments please.
How to NOT update firmware in your NAS storage
Once I had a NAS called Dlink DNS-323. Awesome device, I just loved it and I would have stayed with it, if my requirements didn’t change. It says on dlink’s website, that you should backup your data before updating firmware and recreate your array after. Well, I didn’t do it and no wonder, that after few weeks, listen what happend to me. I issued a simple command to delete one unnecessary folder on dlink. After five minutes of deleting I was curious why it is taking so much time. I switched to deleting dialog and I almost had a heart attack. Dlink was deleting all my precious folders in array. Not only those that I wanted to delete, but all of them. I hit a cancel button and checked what was missing and what a waste it was. There were many painful days after that moment. I can’t blame dlink, since they have a warning about this on their web, I can only say: “Kids, not only backup your data when updating firmware, check if you need to recreate an array too!”

Stop being lazy programmer!
I recently read two articles – Fire and Motion by Joel and The theory of one by Michael. It is very interesting reading for somebody who is interested in idea to be more efficient in his life. It doesn’t matter in which area.
What? One line of code every day? Why should I write one line of code only for sake of fulfilling some kind of daily routine? And, honestly, what can one line of code achieve? When I was reading Joel’s post for the first time, I was on my way to leave – I don’t believe in such psychological theories. But as I was digging into it deeper and deeper I realized that this one could work, and the best part, it does (for me).
When one decides to be more successful in something, one can have pretty strong attitude and be able to commit huge amount of energy in the beginning towards this thing. I see it on myself. However in my case, long-term focus on one thing is a problem. After few days (weeks) I always see myself watching movies in free-time, playing games… let’s say I’m trying to amuse myself with everything else except the thing that I’m supposed to focus at. Maybe it’s personality thing, maybe not. Good news is, we can fight with that. Don’t get me wrong, I can deliver some kind of product almost every day, sometimes it is school lab, sometimes work. Now we are talking about what to do with time that left, and sometimes, there is a lot of time that left and I decided from now on, not to waste that time.
I wrote myself spreadsheet with “one line that goes to x”, I have to accomplish every day. x = { book, blog, code } in my case. This one line of x really isn’t as important as you can see. Important thing is to get up and write that 1 line. Sometimes it will be only this 1 line (when you really don’t have time or mood), sometimes it can be 100. Important is to do it and break that barrier in your brain. As far as it is 2 weeks now, I forced to be self-disciplined in this and to finish at least one line of x every single day, without exception. And I must say I just love it. Last two weeks I am more productive than ever. Every day after I finish my daily duties, I will sit down and write few lines to my book, few lines to my blog (as today) and few lines of code. It really doesn’t have to be much and it costs me only few minutes per day. This approach is very refreshing and it confirmed, once again for me, that I need some kind of policeman sitting on my shoulder to look after me, because long term self-discipline simply doesn’t work for me. When pressure or attitude fades out, my effort tends to be lower and lower through time. This is my success story and I thank to guys mentioned at the beginning for great articles, lots of good points were mentioned there.
